Multidrug-resistance pathogens in foods

Abstract
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens can enter the food chain and pose a significant risk to consumers. This talk reviews the roles of animal- and plant-derived foods as vehicles for MDR pathogens, with insights into how food processes, environments and storage conditions impact the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. Alternative antimicrobial strategies to tackle the MDR pathogens will also be discussed.

Dr. Siyun Wang is a Professor and the principal investigator of the Wang Lab of Molecular Food Safety at the University of British Columbia, where she teaches and conducts research on ensuring a safer food supply system by tackling microbial pathogens. Prior to joining UBC in 2013, Siyun was a postdoc associate at Cornell University.
Siyun has authored over 70 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on microbial food safety. Awards she received included Notable Distinctions at UBC, the Food Safety Award from BC Food Protection Association, the Young Researcher Initiative from the European Food Safety Authority, and the scholarship for young women scientists underrepresented in STEM from the US National Science Foundation.
Siyun currently serves as an Associate Editor of Current Research in Food Science, an editorial board member of Journal of Food Protection and Food Microbiology, and a review editor of Frontiers in Microbiology|Phage Biology.
