Environmental public health and the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 2.0: contribution and impact
Abstract
The Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Release 2.0 marks a pivotal moment for Environmental Public Health Professionals (EPHPs) and the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI). Building on the 2008 framework that shaped professional standards and certification, Release 2.0 offers a renewed foundation for leadership, innovation, and collaboration across Canada’s public health system. Through active engagement in national virtual and in-person sessions, EPHPs demonstrated strong interest and high participation, contributing perspectives that meaningfully shaped the updated core competencies.
This paper describes the background and collective effort behind Release 2.0, including engagement processes that incorporated EPHP perspectives to ensure that environmental public health remains central to advancing competency-based education, workforce development, and effective practice nationwide.
