Our commitment to truth and reconciliation
The NCCEH builds capacity through networks, mobilizes evidence, and identifies knowledge and practice gaps in environmental public health (EPH).
Our head office is located on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We recognize the rights and title of Indigenous Peoples across what is now called Canada. We understand that Indigenous communities continue to face health inequities, and we are committed to identifying and helping to address those associated with environmental determinants. The NCCEH will do this by:
Capacity building:
- Connecting more intentionally to Indigenous organizations working in EPH practice and inviting representation on our advisory board.
- Ensuring that Indigenous partners are welcomed and encouraged to join NCCEH communities of practice and that those communities provide culturally safe spaces.
Knowledge mobilization:
- Offering a platform for Indigenous scholars and EPH practitioners to share their work via our products.
- Seeking other ways to elevate Indigenous voices/perspectives on EPH and learnings from Indigenous communities through our network.
- Developing products that strive to address the realities and challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
Gap identification:
- Engaging partners to identify EPH knowledge and practice gaps specific to Indigenous communities.
We will revisit these commitments annually as part of our work-planning to ensure we are progressing. For more information on how we are doing this work, please contact [email protected].
