What does it mean to work upstream? And what are the opportunities to ‘shift upstream’ from where you currently are?
The phrase “working upstream” is often used to describe a variety of interventions. However, sometimes this concept is used to describe activities that actually reinforce the focus on individual lifestyle and treating immediate health outcomes.
NCCDH has recently revised the foundational resource Let’s Talk: Moving Upstream to clarify these concepts and encourage application to practice. In this webinar, we will explore using a stream analogy to highlight levels of action for public health to address health equity. We will also discuss:
- Upstream as a concept, rationale, and way of working
- How down, mid, and upstream approaches intersect with structural and social determinants of health
- Defining attributes of what it means to work upstream
- Practical applications to public health practice
