We’ll discuss how residues from medications can affect ecosystems and the potential risks to human health, particularly in vulnerable populations. We’ll also explore Canadian programs and regulations for the management of pharmaceutical waste.

Speakers:
Gigi Wong – Pharmacist, Quality, Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services, Fraser Health. Gigi is a pharmacist in Vancouver, BC, who strives to increase awareness of the pharmacy impacts on planetary health, to inspire action towards more sustainable healthcare systems. Gigi focus is on increasing awareness of pharmaceuticals in the environment and its impact on non-target organisms, as well as reducing medication waste in drug distribution systems. Over the years, Gigi has dedicated herself to serve this cause.
Allen Bridge – Chair, Health Care Waste Management Community of Practice. Allen possesses over three decades of experience in the development and implementation of waste management and waste minimization policies and programs across diverse sectors, including healthcare, higher education, and private industry. Notably, Allen serves as the Chair of the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) Health Care Waste Management Technical Committee and holds the position of Vice Chair for the Long-Term Care Technical Committee. Additionally, he is an active member of the CSA Social Responsibility Technical Committee. In a collaborative effort with CASCADES and the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, Allen chairs the Health Care Waste Management Community of Practice. Allen’s educational background is anchored in environmental stewardship, having earned a Master of Environment and Management degree from Royal Roads University.
