Moving the needle on local climate action: Sackville’s Mayor’s Roundtable on Climate Change
Located on the traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq people along the Bay of Fundy, Sackville, New Brunswick is vulnerable to many climate risks, including increased extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and flooding. As a direct response to youth climate strikes, the Mayor of Sackville convened a Roundtable on Climate Change in 2019. The Roundtable is comprised of youth and agricultural representatives, biologists, educators, administrators, and other community leaders. The mandate of the Roundtable is to improve the Town’s mitigation and adaptation efforts by eliciting public input on priority initiatives, reviewing capital budget projects using a climate lens, and collaborating on long-term planning to ensure ongoing climate action in the community.
This webinar will provide a brief introduction to the Sackville community, the Roundtable’s structure and key activities (e.g. developing a ‘climate lens’, organizing public forum), as well as insights into how this model could be adopted in other communities. Participants can expect to learn about how this unique initiative took root and what current challenges and opportunities exist for advancing climate action in communities like Sackville.
